Fear of flying is what brings most people to me. But it's rarely the whole story.
In almost every session I run, something else surfaces alongside flying - a broader pattern of anxiety, a long-held phobia, a quiet voice saying you can't do this. The fear of flying is often just the most visible symptom of something the subconscious mind has been running in the background for years.
The good news is this: the approach I use to help people fly with genuine confidence works on far more than flying. Because whether it's a plane, a lift, a motorway or a room full of people - the mechanism behind the fear is the same.
The subconscious mind has learned to feel threatened. And what it has learned, it can unlearn.
Phobias
The subconscious wiring behind fear of flying shows up in many other phobias. While the trigger is different, the mechanism - and the solution - is remarkably similar.
Fear of Heights
Heights, glass floors, tall buildings, bridges, ladders - the specific trigger varies from person to person, but the response is the same. A rush of physical sensation that feels completely out of proportion to the actual danger. This is the subconscious doing its job a little too enthusiastically - and it responds very well to the right approach.
Claustrophobia
Lifts, small rooms, crowded spaces, tunnels, enclosed transport — for people who experience claustrophobia, the fear isn't really about the space itself. It's about the feeling of being unable to escape it. That distinction matters, because it's exactly where the therapeutic work begins.
Driving Anxiety
Motorways, busy junctions, roundabouts, driving after an accident — driving anxiety is far more common than people admit, largely because admitting it feels like a practical problem rather than a fear. It is a fear, and it's one I help clients with regularly. Life can shrink considerably when certain roads are off limits.
Social Anxiety
The fear of being judged, of saying the wrong thing, of walking into a room and feeling immediately exposed - social anxiety can quietly limit almost every area of life without ever announcing itself as a phobia. For many of my clients it sits alongside their flying fear, feeding from the same source.
Health Anxiety
Contamination fears, a preoccupation with illness, dread of medical or dental appointments - health anxiety tends to be self-reinforcing in an exhausting way. The more you monitor, the more you notice. The more you notice, the more anxious you become. Breaking that cycle is exactly what solution-focused hypnotherapy is designed to do.
Fear of Failure
The fear of failing doesn't always feel like a phobia - but it functions like one. The avoidance of new experiences, the holding back from career moves or creative pursuits, the sense that it's safer not to try. Fear of failure keeps an enormous number of people smaller than they need to be, and it is absolutely something we can work on together.
Anxiety & Wellbeing
Fear of flying often arrives alongside a broader current of anxiety. These are areas I work with regularly - sometimes alongside the flying work, often completely separately.
Stress & Anxiety
Chronic stress, persistent overthinking, a nervous system that never quite switches off - these aren't character flaws, they're patterns. Patterns the subconscious has learned, often over many years. We don't just talk about stress in our sessions. We work to retrain how your mind and body actually respond to it.
Sleep & Night-Before Anxiety
Racing thoughts at bedtime, difficulty falling asleep, waking at 3am with a mind that won't stop - poor sleep and anxiety are deeply connected, each one making the other worse. Night-before anxiety in particular - whether before a flight, an event, an interview or anything else - is something I have specific experience helping people with.
Confidence & Self-Belief
Imposter syndrome, self-doubt, fear of judgement, difficulty speaking up or being visible - the same subconscious patterns behind fear of flying show up constantly in how people relate to themselves and their own capabilities. If you feel held back by a quiet but persistent belief that you're not quite enough, this is absolutely within the scope of what we work on together.
Performance
When the stakes feel high, the subconscious mind can work against you. This is an area where the tools I use - clinical hypnotherapy, NLP and CBT - make a very direct and measurable difference.
Sports Performance
Mental blocks, competition anxiety, loss of form, return from injury, confidence under pressure - elite performance is as much a mental discipline as a physical one. The subconscious patterns that hold athletes back are often invisible until you know where to look. Once identified, they can be changed with surprising speed.
Career & Professional Performance
Presentations, job interviews, leadership anxiety, visibility in the workplace, the fear of being found out - professional performance anxiety is remarkably common at every level. The higher the stakes feel, the louder the subconscious tends to get. Learning to quiet that voice - genuinely, not just temporarily - is transformative.
The Common Thread
Whether it's a phobia, a performance block, a sleep pattern or a decade of self-doubt - if logic and willpower alone haven't fixed it, there's a reason for that.
These things live in the subconscious mind. And that's exactly where I work.
